Nutella Puff Pastry Recipe Ingredients

  • Puff pastry: Using store-bought puff pastry sheets keeps this an easy recipe, but you can use homemade puff pastry or even chocolate puff pastry for an even more decadent treat.
  • Nutella: This chocolate hazelnut spread makes this dessert what it is! For this recipe, you will want your creamy Nutella chilled, so remember to put it in the fridge for a few hours.
  • Milk & Powdered sugar: The milk will help the dough stick together and with giving the pastry a nice golden color, the powdered sugar is perfect for dusting the pastries before serving!
Ingredients for the recipe.

How to Make Nutella Puff Pastry Balls

To start, you will need to do a few preparation steps! Chill the jar of Nutella until it is firm. Also, if using frozen puff pastry, you will need to thaw the pastry dough first.

Next, unroll the flaky puff pastry and then using a rolling pin, roll to even it out and cut into 4-6 squares. Leave a strip for cut outs or decorator ropes, if desired.

Cutting the squares and cut outs.

Place a big scoop of Nutella in the middle of each square and a sprinkle of chopped nuts if desired, brush the edges of the squares with a little milk, then starting from the opposite ends bring up the corners to meet, do this again with the remaining corners and squeeze to close. Decorate with twisted strips of pastry or cut out pastry shapes with a cookie cutter.

Placing the Nutella and closing the squares.

Place in a greased and floured or sprayed muffin tin, brush with a little milk, bake until golden brown. Cool enough to handle, dust with powdered sugar and serve.

Tips and Variations

  • Chilled Nutella: Either chill your whole jar of Nutella or place spoonfuls of Nutella on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet and then freeze them for an hour before placing one in the middle of each square.
  • Shape of the pastry: Instead of the balls, you can make Nutella puff pastry twists by spreading Nutella on strips of pastry then twisting it or make puff pastry braids or even puff pastry pinwheels!
  • Filling ideas: Along with Nutella you could add some chopped pecans, peanut butter or even some cream cheese. Instead of Nutella try a fruit jam, like strawberry jam or raspberry jam!
  • Chocolate orange: Add some orange zest on the top of the Nutella before baking. It pairs so well together just like in my chocolate orange brownies.
  • Warm spices: Add a sprinkle of cinnamon or cardamom to the Nutella filling before baking.
  • Egg wash: If you love a shiny look on your pastry, combine 1 egg with a Tablespoon of water or milk and brush on pastry before baking.
  • Glaze: After puff pastry with Nutella has cooled instead of dusting with powdered sugar, add an icing sugar glaze or even a chocolate glaze.

What should I do if my pastry is stuck together?

This is a sign that your pastry has become too warm at room temperature. You can either stick it in the fridge to get cold again or just carefully roll it out. Do not refreeze it though.

Can I make this nut-free?

Sure! You can use a hazelnut free chocolate spread or if you can find a chocolate sunflower seed better that would work too. If you don’t have either of those options, a piece of dark chocolate in the middle would also be delicious for a chocolate puff pastry variation similar to my easy puff pastry recipe.

I ended up making four of these Puff Pastry Balls and they were gone in seconds. I had to beg for a taste. So if you don’t have any puff pastry hanging around, I would advise you to go buy some and give these Nutella Stuffed Puff Pastry Balls a try. Enjoy!

  • 1 store bought puff pastry dough package
  • ½-1 cup Nutella

EXTRAS

  • 2-3 tablespoons milk
  • 2-3 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • Pre-heat oven to 375F / 190C. Grease and flour or spray a 4- 6 medium size muffin tin. Place jar of Nutella in fridge for at least 3-4 hours or until very cold and firm. You could also place spoonfuls of Nutella on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet and then freeze them for an hour then place one in the middle of each square.

  • Thaw the puff pastry if frozen, unroll and using a rolling pin, roll to even it out but do not make it too thin, cut into 4- 6 squares, make sure you leave a strip for cut outs or decorator ropes.

  • Place a scoop of Nutella in the middle of each square, brush the edges with milk and starting from the opposite ends bring up the corners to meet, do this again with the remaining corners (see photos) and squeeze to close. Decorate with twisted strips of pastry or cut outs. Place in prepared muffin tin, brush with milk, bake for approximately 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and baked through. Let cool enough to handle, dust with powdered sugar and serve. Enjoy!

My puff pastry was 13×10 inches (33 x 25 cm), I made 4 squares each 5 x 5 inches / 12.5 x 12.5 cm. The remaining dough I made flower cut outs.

How to store these pastries?

This Nutella puff pastry recipe is really best the day it is made! If you have any leftovers, you can store them in a parchment paper lined airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge. The fridge may help keep the pastry crisp.

Can I reheat leftover pastries?

You can reheat the Nutella pastry dessert in the air fryer for a few minutes or the microwave but be careful as they might as the flaky pastry can be ruined quickly. Again, try to enjoy them fresh the first day they are made for best results!
