Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes – This tasty crowd favorite is the perfect sandwich for parties, tailgates, game days, or backyard barbecues. It’s easy to make, kid-friendly, and all-around comfort food. 

Ground steak and provolone with classic sloppy joe seasonings make this a popular variation of sloppy joes. The beautiful tangy, a bit spicy, sweet, and cheesy combo makes it hard not to go back for seconds, believe me. 😆

Plus, it’s just so dang easy to make! This recipe has saved my weeknight dinner more than once. It’s as simple as sauteeing some beef and veggies, adding a few sauces and seasonings, and then piling it all on a bun.

Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes for Your Next Party

This easy Philly cheese steak sloppy joe recipe makes amazing party food. Here’s why: Prep work is super simple, it’s an affordable way to feed a crowd, and even picky eaters love this dish (ahem, kids). So go ahead and put it on your next game day menu. No need to thank me. 😜

Recipe Ingredients

  1. Ground Beef – Crumbly, perfectly cooked lean ground beef is ideal for these saucy, sloppy joes.   
  2. Veggies – Onion, green bell pepper, and garlic add color, flavor, and texture to the mix.
  3. Seasonings – Amp up the flavor with ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, white pepper, paprika, Creole seasoning, and beef broth. 
  4. Cheese – Provolone is the classic sloppy joe cheese. However, shredded provolone, mozzarella, or a combination of both works fine. 
  5. Buns – Brioche hamburger buns are my fave, but any bun or roll is delicious. 

How to Make Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes

Brown the beef, saute the veggies, and make the sauce
Simmer and add the Provolone
  • Heat a large or cast iron skillet over medium-high and add the ground beef, cooking for 3-5 minutes or until brown. (Photo 1)
  • Drain – Remove the meat from the pan and discard excess grease, especially if using regular ground beef. Use your best judgment here on how much to toss. (Photo 2)
  • Saute – Add the butter, onions, garlic, bell peppers, and green onions, sauteing them for 1-2 minutes. (Photo 3)
  • Sauce – Return the ground beef to the pan. Follow with the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, white pepper, paprika, and Creole seasoning. Cook for about 2 minutes. (Photo 4)
  • Slurry – In a small cup, mix the beef stock and cornstarch and add it to the beef mixture. Cook for 4-5 minutes or until the liquid reduces slightly. Add salt and pepper to taste. (Photo 5)
  • Serve – Finally, turn off the heat, add the provolone cheese, and serve on toasted rolls or brioche buns. (Photo 6)

Recipe Variations

  1. Turn it into a taco. Substituting corn tortillas for the buns is also delicious. Use taco seasoning instead of Creole seasoning for a Mexican spin on it.
  2. Try the sloppy joe mixture on a potato. Pile a spoonful atop a baked potato for an insanely good stuffed baked potato. 😋
  3. Use a different ground meat. It won’t be a cheese “steak” recipe anymore, but I won’t tell. Try this recipe with ground chicken, turkey, or even lamb. 

Tips and Tricks

  1. Use a large skillet to brown the beef. It browns better when it’s not crowded. 
  2. Break up clumps in the beef as you brown it. That helps keep the overall texture even and makes the sandwiches a tad less “sloppy.” 😅
  3. Worcestershire sauce is the main flavor component of this recipe. But if you must substitute it, try tamari or soy sauce.

Make-Ahead Instructions

You can make this a day or two in advance. Follow the recipe, but wait to add the cheese. Let the mix cool and store it in an airtight container in the fridge. It’s even better the next day.

Add the cheese when you reheat the dish on the stove. When the sloppy joe mix heats through, pile it on your toasted buns and dig in.

Serving and Storage Instructions 

Serve Philly cheesesteak sloppy joes hot off the stove. Pile the steamy filling on toasted buns and enjoy.

Store leftovers in the fridge in an airtight container for 3-5 days. Don’t store the sandwiches already assembled, or your buns will get soggy. Instead, store buns and filling separately. Reheat the sandwich filling on the stove or in the microwave, and then serve it atop freshly toasted buns for a homemade meal.

These are heavenly with seasoned fries or crispy Cajun fries, but yuca fries or sweet potato fries would also be amazing. Don’t forget to wash it all down with a cold beer. 🍻
