Omma Chicken Soup Review: $6.80 Samgyetang In Bedok

Must Try

Omma Chicken Soup has affordable samgyetang in Bedok

Samgyetang restaurants have been popping up all over Singapore lately, and most of them will set you back a good $20 or more for a sit-down bowl. Omma Chicken Soup, a hawker stall with outlets at Bedok 216 Food Centre and Alexandra Village Food Centre, offers the same comforting samgyetang vibes from just $6.80. By 10:30am on a weekday, a queue that snakes around the stall tells you how quickly word has spread.

The stall is helmed by two ex-fine-dining chefs who previously worked at a Michelin-starred Korean restaurant. They are also co-owners of Cha Mulan. At Omma, the chicken broth is slow-simmered for eight hours, and the stall does not use MSG, pork, or lard. Curious to try it out for ourselves, we visited the humble hawker stall with empty stomachs and high expectations.

Food at Omma Chicken Soup

Everything on Omma’s menu is priced under $8, including chicken soups, sides, and porridge. The cheapest soups on the menu are the Collagen OMMA ($6.80) and Spicy Collagen OMMA ($6.80). There’s also the Ginseng Omma ($7.80), which is a crowd favourite.

Ginseng Omma intro

The Ginseng Omma is the one to order if you’re looking for something nourishing. It arrived in a black stone bowl with a strong herbal aroma, and the ginseng really shone here. As someone who isn’t the biggest fan of ginseng soups—the earthy, slightly bitter taste can sometimes feel medicinal—this version was balanced with a clean, naturally sweet finish instead.

The real highlight was the chicken drumstick, which was absolutely massive. The skin had a slippery, gelatinous texture, and the meat literally fell off the bone. I could also taste the ginseng infused into the chicken itself, giving each bite a subtle earthiness. For $7.80, this was genuinely good value.

Spicy Collagen OMMA intro shot

We also had the Spicy Collagen Omma, since my colleague is a huge fan of spicy food. Each stone bowl comes with a rich collagen broth that’s gently spiced, deep orangey-red in colour, and topped with the same huge chicken leg, sliced scallions, red dates, goji berries, and jujube, AKA Korean red dates. It also came with a trio of mixed pepper-salt, sesame oil, and kimchi on the side.

That said, don’t expect a fiery punch—the heat level here is present but mild, more of a warm tingle than a proper kick. That actually worked in the broth’s favour, letting the collagen base shine through: clean and slightly silky without feeling heavy. Even for someone who can’t handle spice, this was easy and enjoyable to eat.

Collagen Porridge intro shot

As we needed some carbs, we also got the Collagen Porridge ($4.90), which came with the same ingredients as the soups, minus the chicken leg. A word of caution before you order: this dish is closer to Teochew-style porridge consistency than the thick, silky congee we were expecting, with goji berries providing the only hint of sweetness.

The shredded chicken on top leaned slightly dry, unfortunately.

kimchi close up

If you want some flavour, pile in the kimchi that comes on the side. The portion may not be enough, which is why we ended up ordering an extra serving of Signature Kimchi ($1.20). For the price, we got a solid portion of well-fermented kimchi that was tangy and crunchy enough to elevate the simpler dishes.

Ambience at Omma Chicken Soup

Located within Bedok 216 Food Centre, Omma Chicken Soup feels like a step above your typical hawker setup. The storefront is clean with a charming illustrated “omma” on the signboard, digital menu screens, and a neat row of sesame oil bottles lining the counter. We came down on a weekday morning around 10am and were among the first customers, but the queue started to build within 30 minutes. It seems to be a hit among the older crowd, with nearly every nearby table ordering from the stall.

Omma Chicken Soup – Eatbook review

Overall, OMMA Chicken Soup punches well above its price point. The samgyetang offers genuine comfort and solid quality for under $8, and even though the porridge could use a little more seasoning, there’s a lot to like at hawker prices—especially with ex-Michelin chefs behind the stove. Even as someone who doesn’t typically go for Korean soups, I can see myself coming back.
