This recipe for high-crowned chocolate muffins is loaded with chocolate flavor semi-sweet chocolate morsels and simply the perfect muffin.

These deep chocolate muffins go well with any hot beverage and even a scoop of ice cream.

Our super easy recipe using a doctored cake mix will fool everyone that they aren’t made from scratch.

The muffins taste great plain, dusted with powdered sugar, or with a drizzle of our chocolate homemade icing (the recipe is included below).

The muffins can easily be adapted so don’t be afraid to experiment with whatever mix-ins you prefer to add to the batter or just on top before baking.

Easy Steps to Make Chocolate Cake Mix Muffins

  1. Prepare a muffin tin with liners or grease them with cooking oil spray and preheat the oven to 400 degrees
  2. Mix the cake mix with all the ingredients except chocolate chips
  3. After the batter is smooth and combined, fold in the chips
  4. Fill 12 muffin cups with the batter and bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes
  5. Serve plain, dusted with powdered sugar, or with a drizzle of chocolate icing on top

  6. sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar or regular granulated sugar before baking for extra sweetness
  7. drizzle with icing after cooling the muffins with warm icing

Copycat Chocolate Cake Mix Muffins

Chocolate Cake Mix Muffins are a game changer much like a bakery flavor and have high crowns. These are super easy, moist, and delicious!

Ingredients

  • Chocolate Cake Mix Muffin Batter:
  • 1 chocolate cake mix (15.25 ounce size) of any brand
  • 1 1/2 cups of semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons of AP flour
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup of vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Garnish is Optional: mini chocolate chips before baking sprinkles on top
  • Optional Chocolate Icing:
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon corn syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and grease or use the paper liners for a giant muffin pan or use the regular size muffin tins.
  2. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl until the batter is smooth folding in the chocolate chips last.
  3. Spoon into the muffin tins.
  4. Sprinkle with mini chocolate chips if using.
  5. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes depending on what size tin you’ve used.
  6. These are perfectly eaten plain, dusted with powdered sugar.
  7. Chocolate Icing Instructions:
  8. Melt the chips with all ingredients in a double boiler until the chips are melted.
  9. Drizzle over the muffins while the icing is warm.
