Apple Cobbler Recipe – Immaculate Bites

Must Try

The ever-popular fall apple cobbler, made from juicy, fresh apples and cozy spices, is topped with a golden brown, crumbly, biscuit-like top. Nothing beats that heavenly cinnamon apple smell wafting through the air on a crisp autumn day, except actually digging into it with a spoon.

Fresh from the oven, apple cobbler is absolute comfort food. Such warm, cozy, and saucy apples, coupled with an easy biscuit topping, deliver a dessert that will have you going back for seconds even when you are totally stuffed.

And I’m going to let you in on my secret trick that makes my recipe for apple cobbler really shine. Add finely chopped crystallized ginger on top for a surprising and mouthwatering zing! I know it’s an American dessert, but I couldn’t resist adding more of my beautiful ginger.

Recipe Notes

  • Add some sliced pears or blackberries for more delicious fruitiness.
  • A mix of sweet and tart apples provides more complexity. Pink Lady, Granny Smith, Braeburn, and Golden Delicious work nicely.
  • Peeling the apples is optional, but it does deliver better texture and consistency.
  • For easier cleanup, place the baking dish in the oven on top of a baking sheet to catch what bubbles over.

Make-Ahead and Storage Instructions

Cobbler keeps in the fridge for 3-5 days and reheats nicely in the oven (or eat it cold). You can also freeze it for 3-4 months, and thaw it in the fridge the night before.

If you want it hot, bake it in a 350℉ (180℃) oven for 10-12 minutes or a minute or two in the microwave. But keep an eye on the crust, so it doesn’t burn.

What Pairs With Apple Cobbler

Enjoy a huge slice of apple cobbler with a dollop of homemade whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Don’t forget to brew a pot of coffee (or whip up a pumpkin spice latte) for your guests.

The Apple Filling

  • Preheat the oven to 350℉ (180℃). Spray a 9×13-inch baking pan with cooking oil or coat it with a thin layer of butter and set aside.

  • Peel, core, and slice the apples, then toss them with the lemon juice.

  • Heat the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar in a saucepan on medium until it all melts.

  • Then, add the apples with the lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, cornstarch, and vanilla, and stir until well combined. Reduce the heat and let it cook for about 7 minutes or until the apples are firm but tender.

  • Remove the apple filling from the stove, let it cool slightly, and pour it into the greased baking dish.

The Biscuit Cobbler Topping

  • Mix the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda in a large bowl.

  • Add butter, and mix it with your hands until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  • Gently stir in the buttermilk until everything is moist, being careful not to overwork the dough.

  • Scoop the dough by spoonfuls and spread it over the apple pie filling evenly across the pan. Sprinkle the top with crystallized ginger.

  • Bake at 350℉ (180℃) for 40-45 minutes or until the biscuits are cooked through and the filling is bubbly. Remove and let it cool slightly for serving with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

  • Homemade biscuits are best for this recipe, but canned biscuits will work in a pinch.
