Ingredient Notes

flour , eggs , buttermilk , panic , cornmeal , sweet onion , seasoned salt and cayenne pepper with labels to make Air Fryer Onion Rings
  • Sweet Onion: Sweet onions become tender and lightly caramelized as they cook, giving this dish its signature mild, sweet flavor. Yellow onions can be used, but they’ll have a slightly sharper, more pungent taste.
  • Seasoned Salt: Seasoned salt adds savory flavor throughout the coating. Use your favorite store-bought blend or my homemade seasoned salt for the best flavor.
  • Panko Bread Crumbs: Panko creates a lighter, crunchier coating than regular breadcrumbs. Store-bought works perfectly, or make homemade panko bread crumbs.
  • Buttermilk: Buttermilk adds tangy flavor and helps the coating adhere while creating a tender, crisp texture. Forgot to grab some? Make my easy buttermilk substitute.
  • Press the Panko: Press the breading firmly onto each ring for a thicker, crunchier coating.
  • Let Them Rest: Let the breaded onion rings rest for 5 to 10 minutes before air frying so the coating sticks better.
  • Use Oil: Spray the onion rings lightly before cooking to help them brown evenly.
  • Cook in Batches: Don’t overcrowd the basket. Cook in batches to allow proper airflow for maximum crispness.

Save Every Last Ring

  • Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze breaded, uncooked onion rings on a baking sheet until firm, then transfer to a freezer bag for up to 3 months. Cook directly from frozen, adding several extra minutes.
  • Cooked rings will lose their crispness when frozen. Reheat in a 350°F Air Fryer for 3 to 5 minutes or bake at 375°F for about 8 to 10 minutes to recrisp.
