Start with the Dai Tao Signature Soup (RM38), where the staff flambees the various ingredients of your choice with ginger, Shaoxing wine, and raw and fried garlic right in front of you. Hidden behind a huge blue door is The Blue Door Coffee House in Mount Austin, where you’ll find a good selection of matcha drinks and desserts. The cafe opens till 12am on weekends, making it a go-to spot for night owls! Speaking of matcha, we really enjoyed the Matcha ah Yuzu (RM20), a concoction of Niko Neko matcha and sweet-tangy yuzu compote topped with a biscuit. If matcha isn’t your thing, get the Creme Brulee Latte (RM23) or Earl Grey Cham (RM25) instead; the latter is a combination of an espresso shot, fresh milk, and Earl Grey tea finished with velvety smooth Earl Grey cream. Pair your drinks with the popular Pisatchio Cookies Mochi Croissant (RM18), where flaky pastry layers are combined with chewy mochi and rich pistachio cream.

For diners in a group of three or four, we recommend the Honey Mustard Cheesy Fried Chicken Bumbuk (RM74.20), which features 12 pieces of boneless fried chicken coated in honey mustard sauce and mozzarella cheese on a pan. If you want something punchier and richer, consider the K’Fry Spicy Yangnyeom Wings (RM28.90) and Snow Cheese Garlic (RM47.80)

For those looking for a cafe to get some work done or enjoy me time, consider Brooos & Co. Located just a 15-minute drive from the customs, the cafe features a cool office-themed cafe interior with plugs. Food-wise, we tried their JWC Tacos (RM50++), which comprises tacos in three different flavours: Smoked Duck, Smoked Salmon and Pulled Chicken. The former was our favourite, as the duck was meaty and the taco was loaded with guacamole. They also have Marukyu Koyamaen’s Isuzu Uji Matcha (RM20++) and Piease Chill (RM18), which is essentially a pistachio latte.

Those looking for a Bali-esque vibe shouldn’t skip Hidden Garden By The Sea. The gorgeous cafe has mains under $10, and opens till 12am every day. The space is decked with wooden chairs, rattan lanterns, and other Balinese-inspired furniture, and the best part is that it’s located right along the Singapore-Malaysia straits, so you can snap photos with the sea as your backdrop. Food-wise, opt for the Fusion Seafood Spaghetti (RM42+) if you love seafood; it consists of al dente noodles in a Sarawak laksa sauce, topped with squid, clams, and fresh prawns. There’s also Salted Egg Chicken Rice (RM30+) or Japanese Curry Chicken Katsudon (RM30+) for your consideration.

Da Cheng Lok Lok is my go-to for a late-night lok lok experience in JB. Located right outside KSL City Mall, the ordering process here is straightforward. Simply bring your favourite meats, vegetables, and seafood skewers to the cashier, take a seat, and wait for your number to be called. Options here are limitless, with popular picks including hotdog, meatballs, mantou and more. Each skewer is deep-fried, and you can pair them alongside the free-flow sauces, including a Thai sweet sauce and their house-made extra spicy chilli sauce.

For a supper that’s slightly more atas, head to Deep Bistro, a chill (literally) hideout that’s igloo-themed. Stepping inside feels like entering a magical, icy cave! For the hungry, their signature mains are the Grilled Salmon with Cod Fish Sauce (RM38.99) or Yellowtail Cheek with Salt (RM29.99). Otherwise, go for small bites such as the Croquettes Stuffed with Potatoes, Cheese and Crab (RM12.99) and pair them with draft beers. The bistro is open until 1am, and even features live music from performing bands on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9pm.

Selera Senibong Seafood is a halal seafood option housed in a building by the waterfront. You will find tanks upon tanks of live seafood for you to pick your dinner from, with the seafood fresh from Senibong Cove, right where the restaurant is located. They are most known for their Spicy Chilli Sauce Crab and Golden Salted Egg Prawn, among a dizzying array of other seafood, all charged at market price. They are open till 12am daily, so this is definitely a viable supper spot!

Their comforting Pan Mee (RM8.90) comes in either white or black sauce, and we heard that their noodles are thicker than others for a firmer bite. You can also find other dishes such as the Signature Asam Pedas Sotong Rice (RM12.90), Spicy Curry Chicken Rice (RM13.90), and Authentic Braised Pork Rice (RM13.90) if you’re feeling peckish for something else.
