7UP Biscuits Recipe – These biscuits are totally tasty and extremely easy to make. They are light and fluffy and come together ridiculously quickly. When you are in a hurry but can’t live without putting some biscuits on the table, this is your recipe.
Part of the reason these biscuits are so easy to make is that you only need four ingredients to whip them up! Seriously, making biscuits has never been easier.
As far as texture goes, these biscuits are less flaky and more fluffy. They are oh-so-light, which makes them a great side to heavier meals or a perfectly portioned afternoon snack! 👌
What Do 7UP Biscuits Taste Like?
When I first heard of a biscuit recipe using 7UP, I wondered if the biscuits would taste lemony. Interestingly, they don’t! 7UP biscuits are slightly sweet with a slight tang, similar to buttermilk biscuits.
A lot of people compare them to KFC or Popeyes biscuits. So, what does the 7UP do for the recipe? Primarily, the carbonated soda and acidity contribute to the overall lightness of the biscuits. ☁️
Recipe Ingredients
- Baking Mix – I prefer using all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. But you can definitely make Bisquick biscuits with 7UP and sour cream for a super simple recipe.
- Shortening and butter add richness, and brushing the baking biscuits with butter delivers a beautiful golden brown exterior. Lard and tallow are excellent shortenings (fats that turn solid at room temperature). I used all butter, but use what you have on hand.
- 7UP – This recipe calls for a cup of 7UP, so you don’t need a whole two-liter bottle unless you’re making an extra large batch. And don’t worry about it being brand-name because generic store brands work just fine. It gives the biscuits a good rise and a bit of sweetness.
- Sour Cream adds a little tang and gives the biscuits a tender bite.
How to Make 7UP Biscuits
Make the Dough
- Preheat oven to 425℉ (220℃).
- Combine – Add the baking mix to a large bowl (or whisk all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt), and cut in the shortening until it resembles coarse crumbs. (Photo 1)
- Mix the lemon-lime soda with the sour cream. Make a well in the biscuit mixture and pour in the sour cream mixture. Mix until it holds together and becomes sticky, being careful not to overmix the dough to avoid tough biscuits. (Photos 2-3)
Bake the Biscuits
- Make Biscuits – Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface. Pat the dough gently out to about an inch thick. Cut out the biscuits with a biscuit cutter or a floured glass. Push straight down without twisting to ensure biscuits rise properly. (Photo 4)
- Butter – Pour most of the melted butter into a 9×13-inch baking dish, brushing to coat the baking dish evenly. Place the biscuits in the baking dish and brush them with the remaining melted butter. (Photo 5)
- Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Everyone’s oven temperature varies, so keep an eye on them to avoid overbaking. (Photo 6)
- Serve – Take the biscuits out of the oven and let them rest until they have absorbed all the butter. Enjoy!
Recipe Variations
- Use another soda. Any light-colored soda, lemon-lime, ginger ale, or even Seltzer water.
- Make them cheesy. Add some freshly grated cheddar to these biscuits if you please for a super tasty biscuit.
- Add honey. Make them just a little sweeter by adding about ¼ cup of honey to the dough.
Tips and Tricks
- Handle the dough gently. Overworking biscuit dough can result in tough biscuits. So mix it just until it comes together, and avoid kneading excessively.
- Push straight down without twisting when cutting the biscuit dough with your biscuit cutter or glass. That ensures the biscuits can rise properly.
- If your oven heats unevenly, rotate the baking dish halfway through the baking time for even browning.
Make-Ahead and Storage Instructions
These 7UP biscuits freeze beautifully, allowing you to prepare them up to three months ahead. And you can freeze them either cooked or raw. To fast freeze, place them on a baking sheet until solid. Then, transfer them to a freezer ziplock bag, squeezing out as much air as possible before closing.
If freezing raw biscuits, you can bake them directly from the freezer without thawing. Just keep in mind they’ll need a bit more time to cook.
Store any leftover biscuits in an airtight bag in the fridge for 2-3 days. To enjoy them warm, reheat them in the oven, toaster oven, or microwave.
What Goes With 7UP Biscuits
7UP biscuits are lovely breakfast treats, so enjoy them with turkey sausage and eggs. They also go great with dinner dishes like chicken corn chowder or Instant Pot beef stew. You can even slather them with strawberry butter for dessert or a snack. 😍
