Out of curiosity, I asked my family about the first dish that comes to mind when they think of Chinese food. The answers were mainly dim sum, fried rice and stir-fried noodles. But Chinese cuisine is so much more than just xiao long baos and chicken chow mein. Individual Chinese restaurants offer endless variations and styles, each unique in its own way.
What can be agreed upon is that Chinese food is loved by many, especially us foodies. Here are 11 Chinese restaurants in Singapore we can vouch for that we know both you and your family will love.

1. Pure Gem
Pure Gem, located in the heart of the CBD, seamlessly combines the beauty and deliciousness of Teochew and Cantonese cuisine while retaining its authenticity. Spanning 2 storeys with a refined and modern ambience, the restaurant is conveniently located a hop and a skip away from Telok Ayer MRT Station and Lau Pa Sat. The elegant and cosy environment is perfect for family dinners, or business lunches.

Crab lovers should absolutely savour the Marinated Red Cream Mud Crab 生腌红膏蟹 (S$16 per 100g). It won us over with its punchy flavours and it’s amazing how the gravy topped with fresh coriander stalks and chillies matched so well with the pieces of marinated raw crab. Each piece is gloriously crowned with rich, luscious roe that delivers a smooth indulgent finish. The flesh is plump and naturally sweet.
I’m obsessed with the Steamed Marble Goby with Yellow Bell Pepper 黄椒酱蒸笋壳鱼 (S$15 per 100g) which is tangy, savoury, and subtly fiery. I love how peppery and comforting the Double-Boiled Pig’s Stomach Soup with Kampung Chicken and Conpoy 干贝猪肚土鸡汤 (S$108 for 4 pax) is. The chicken is nice and tender while the pig’s stomach is delicious.

2. Xin Cuisine Chinese Restaurant
Located within the Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium, Xin Cuisine offers an exquisite Cantonese dining experience. Catering to all ages with a wide range of seafood, dim sum, and meat dishes, Xin Cuisine provides an inviting atmosphere for any occasion. For bigger groups, the restaurant also boasts private dining rooms perfect for birthday celebrations, business luncheons, or solemnisation ceremonies.

Signature dishes include the aromatic Home-Style Roast Duck Smoked with Tea Leaves (S$45++ for half, S$80++ for whole), crispy Whole Roast Suckling Pig (Seasonal Price), Baked Australian Scallop With Eggplant And Garlic (S$38++), and Braised Ee-fu Noodle with Lobster (S$40++).
The Superior Fish Maw Soup with Sliced Chicken and Baby Cabbage (S$58++) is a luxurious and nourishing dish that epitomises comfort food.
Fish maw, prized for its rich texture and collagen content, is simmered in a savoury broth, resulting in a soup that’s both hearty and refined. Tender slices of chicken added a delightful protein element soaked in a creamy and milky broth. This harmonious blend of ingredients creates a balanced and wholesome meal that’s perfect for any occasion.

The Baked Sea Perch with Japanese miso (S$24++) is another favourite. The fish, cooked until tender and flaky, harmonises beautifully with the rich, umami miso sauce, which adds a touch of sweetness and depth. I was shocked that the Perch, being a relatively lean fish, could retain all of its moisture.
This dish offers a balanced combination of textures and flavours, showcasing the best of Japanese-inspired cuisine.

3. Qi – House Of Sichuan

Mala. Mala everywhere. This spicy, oily sauce craze heavily features in Qi — House of Sichuan that’s located at Marina Bay Link Mall. The branch in Hong Kong has been awarded a total of 4 Michelin stars, so you know these guys mean business. So, bring along a few of your spice-loving family and friends!

You’ll have to standby a glass of milk before digging into the Braised Garoupa Fish Fillet in Chilli Oil Soup (S$42++ for small, S$62++ for large); the giant bowl comes brimming with a myriad of spices, sweet potato noodles and plump garoupa fillets. The soup may initially come across as too overwhelming, but as I sipped on it, it was light and surprisingly had only a thin layer of oil. Be warned, though, this isn’t for the faint-hearted, but it sure is addictive. We all know a mala-loving family member who would take on the challenge.

4. YELLOW POT

Located in the exquisite Duxton Reserve hotel, Yellow Pot is known for its extremely instagrammable interior. With an aesthetic colour palette of black, yellow and gold, it is not difficult to see why folks love the decor. There are even yellow pots in all sorts of shapes and sizes, courtesy of the restaurant’s name.
The health conscious will be elated to know that they adopt a clean eating philosophy, which means that you won’t find any traces of MSG, additives, or artificial flavouring in their food at all. This meal will no doubt be extra healthy for the older folks in the family.

Many flock to this restaurant for the Cantonese Roasted Duck (S$48++). The preparation behind this masterpiece is crucial for flavour—- it is marinated for 2 days in a fermented beancurd paste and then roasted over hickory wood. The great preparation certainly paid off with a robust burst of flavour bursting in my mouth, paired with a lip-smacking plum sauce. It’s no wonder that this is one of the best roasted ducks in town.

5. Madame Fan

Alan Yau, the founder of renowned UK-based Wagamama chain and Michelin-starred award-winning Hakkasan, launched Madame Fan in 2018. Located at The NCO Club in Singapore, it allows his playful and mouth-watering creations of Chinese fine dining to come to life.

Meat lovers must try the Jasmine Tea Smoked Ribs (S$44++), which is an entire honey-glazed rack of meat, crusted with an exquisite char. There was a subtle smokiness and a wave of pleasant floral notes from the jasmine — I found it delightfully different. With meat that is oh so tender that it directly slips off the bone, this dish will impress the whole table.

6. Man Fu Yuan

Man Fu Yuan at Frasers House, a Luxury Collection Hotel is not only Michelin-recommended, but also known to be one of Singapore’s finest Cantonese restaurants in the city. Each plated dish has an equal distinction of spice and flavour, where age-old techniques are taken up a notch through modern twists and the use of premium ingredients. Celebrating a special milestone or having a family reunion? This place ticks all boxes.

Kick-start your food journey with something not commonly seen, the aromatic 168-hour Cured Fresh Mantis Prawns, Fragrant Wine (S$118++ for 250g). Then enjoy the best of both worlds — meat and seafood — with the Honey-glazed Stuffed Prawn Paste Chicken Wing, Water Chestnut, Furikake (S$36++ for 3 pieces).
For an intense umami flavour, the Superior Rock Lobster Bisque, Hong Kong Shrimp Roe Egg Noodles (Half Lobster) (S$48) is rich and decadent, perfect for seafood aficionados like myself.

7. Fortune Court

Led by an ex-Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant executive chef, Fortune Court at 111 Somerset is an 85-seater Cantonese restaurant specialising in traditional wok-fried dishes, double-boiled soups, claypot specialities, and various signature dishes.

A crowd-favourite that shouldn’t be missed is the Chef’s Signature Prawn (S$20++/S$30++/S$38++). It has a deliciously crispy exterior encasing succulent, fresh prawns within. Enhanced with the aromatic flavours of curry leaves, the creamy sauce adds a touch of spiciness from the chilli padi, giving a delightful burst of flavour with every bite. Indulge in the refreshing Lychee Sweet & Sour Pork (S$18++/S$27++/S$34++), jazzing up the classic pork dish with a fruity addition.

8. Maggie’s

Maggie’s at Keong Saik Road stands out like a sore thumb on this list, serving up Chinese dishes with an unconventional, cheeky twist. The quirky restaurant channels the retro glamour of 1970s Shanghai, complete with vibrant dishes that are just as bold as its interiors. This spot is great for a friends gathering or romantic date night.

Lamb enthusiasts can try the Roasted XinJiang Lamb Ribs (S$45++) that features Gundagai lamb ribs bathed in spiced jus, and fresh herb salad. The Spicy Wagyu Tartare (S$26++) is an interesting mix of Wagyu oyster blade, century egg, fermented chilli, puffed sweet potato noodles, and pickled mushrooms.
The Fortune Seabream Crudo (S$26++) takes an Asian-inspired direction with Kyushu seabream slices dressed in oak-aged vinaigrette, complemented by Dongbei sauerkraut, asparagus, and goji berries. For those who dislike bones, the Roasted Red Snapper (S$44++) is deboned and served with a green peppercorn salsa verde, and slivered potato salad.

9. Mui Kee Congee

Some may think that congee is only for days when you’re sick and lying in bed. However, the congee at Mui Kee Congee located in Shaw Centre at Orchard Road appeals to one and all because their bowls of gruel are packed with marvellous umami and wok hei. Swing by with your grandparents or relatives to enjoy congee prepared on another level.

While the Sliced Threadfin (S$20++) congee looks simple, it actually requires 5 painstaking hours of preparation. First, the mashed century eggs and raw rice grains are stirred together and then, pork bones along with fish stock are poured and mixed in every 5 to 10 minutes. The result? A bowl of thick yet smooth porridge embedded with fried fish slices emanating smoky wok flavour and a hint of ginger. No wonder the congee is approved by tai tais back in Hong Kong. 10. Birds Of A Feather

Fusion cuisine is hit-and-miss but that’s no concern to 10-year-old Chengdu-Western fusion restaurant Birds of a Feather along Amoy Street. Chengdu, the capital of southwestern China’s Sichuan province, is distinguished by its fiery cuisine. Here, that’s elevated with contemporary elements of Western fare.

Spice is everything to Sichuan cuisine and the Find the Chicken in the Chillies (S$19) is an excellent (cute-named) starter to whet your appetite. Classic bruschetta gets an upgrade in the boasting guacamole stuffed with crab, green apple, and tonburi caviar on brioche. For those who love native Chinese cuisine with a twist, this place is the answer.
Price: S$35++ – S$150++ per person

11. Jyu Gae Bistro

Missing the street food of Taiwan? You will be pleased to learn that Jyu Gae Bistro in Lazada One offers a popular array of authentic Taiwanese street favourites. From Taiwanese breakfast items like classic egg crepes to desserts of the famed Taiwanese ice cream popiah, this restaurant is sure to satisfy.

Personally, I was most excited about the Jyu Gae Signature 3 Bowls Set (S$18.90). Indecisive as can be, the idea of having miniature bowls of 3 popular dishes — Braised Pork Rice, Salt-pepper Popcorn Chicken and Oyster Mee Sua is just so appealing to me! It definitely helps that all 3 were done exceptionally well, tasting true to the original back in Taiwan.
A close contender was no doubt the Taiwanese Pork Floss Egg Crepe (S$11.90). Essentially pork floss and egg bundled within roti prata, this little bundle of joy went perfectly with the garlic sauce on the side. A perfect light breakfast!
