Kichi Kichi Omurice is headed by Chef Motokichi Yukimura, who’s known for his eccentric yet charming cooking theatrics. But, is this all just for show, or is his signature omurice actually worth the hype? Here’s our honest review!

Food at Tsukimi Hamburg X Kichi Kichi Omurice

The Tsukimi Hamburg and Kichi Kichi Omurice collab brings the new Kichi Kichi Hamburg Omurice ($16.80++) to Singapore. Each omurice includes a bed of demi-glace fried rice, covered with an omelette, and topped with a hamburg steak.

The rice component certainly did not disappoint! The Japanese fried rice was filled with a plethora of ingredients, including diced white onion, shimeji mushroom, edamame, and chunks of chicken.

Despite being cooked in ketchup and Kichi Kichi’s signature demi-glace sauce, each grain of rice retained an addictive QQ feel, without ever becoming soggy. This worked well with the textural contrast from the white onion pieces, which added a pleasant crunch. I also enjoyed the edamame, which had a satisfying, snappy bite, gently splitting from its shell to reveal the sweet, nutty bean within.

Apart from its heavenly texture, the rice was packed with flavour. The ketchup and sweet-savoury demi-glace not only coated the rice well but also elevated it with a depth of umami, thanks to the sauce’s beef stock.

Being omurice, the rice was blanketed with a spiral-shaped omelette, which chef Yukimura calls the “tornado” omelette.

Having heard of viral omelette recipes—like Gordon Ramsay’s, which calls for adding butter and cream—it was surprising to hear that Kichi Kichi’s omelette is made purely with just three eggs. According to Chef Yukimura, what’s most important is the pan’s temperature—and this proved true!

When we had it, the silky tornado had a light, cloud-like fluffiness, which my colleague and I loved. It was also well-seasoned with just salt and parsley, allowing the eggs’ natural richness to shine.

The dish is also topped with Tsukimi Hamburg’s signature hamburg steak, made with a mix of Miyazaki Wagyu, pork, and US beef. Each bite of the patty lent a soft, tender bite, revealing its juicy, meaty insides. Its charred top deserves a special mention too, as it gave the patty a subtly crisp exterior and added smokiness.

The dish is paired with a trio of sides as well. Each meal will get you a bowl of their egg soup, a side salad, and pickled vegetables.

Their side salad includes a mix of green and purple lettuce, sliced cherry tomatoes, and radish, supposedly dressed in a wasabi-infused sauce. However, contrary to what we were expecting, it tasted more like a sweet-tangy sesame dressing. It wasn’t anything spectacular, but it did offer a refreshing break in between bites of the umami-rich main.

The egg soup had slivers of egg and sprinkles of aromatic sesame seeds that I liked. However, it was too salty for my liking.

I appreciated the addition of pickled veggies to the meal, which includes sliced carrots, radish, cucumbers, and lettuce. They paired well with the main, and helped to cut through its richness.

If you’re not much of a meat eater, the Kichi Kichi Omurice (12.80++), which excludes the hamburg patty, is available too. Even without the steak, it still delivers a flavour explosion, thanks to the rich demi-glace. If needed, an extra serving of the sauce is provided as well, so you can pour it over your omurice!

Ambience at Tsukimi Hamburg X Kichi Kichi Omurice

Tsukimi Hamburg has three locations, but we visited their Jurong Point branch for the purpose of this review. The restaurant offers a relaxing area to dine in, with its minimalist, timber aesthetic. Various Japanese decor elements are displayed too, making it feel as if you’ve teleported to Japan. The eatery can accommodate up to 40 diners, in tables of two to four. This may sound hectic, but its comfy, cushioned seating and zen-inspired decor help maintain a cosy atmosphere.

Tsukimi Hamburg’s Jurong Point outlet is located just next to Boon Lay MRT Station. The brand also has outlets at Hougang Mall for the northies and CapitaSpring for the CBD crowd.
