Hougang pasar malam features pancake robot, carnival games & more until 3 Dec

Must Try

Did you know? There is a Hougang MRT Trade Fair happening right now till 3 Dec. Beyond just your ordinary pasar malam classics like tutu kueh and Taiwanese street food, this one also features “trendier” options like matcha drinks, mochi and smashed burgers. Some of us dropped by to check out this big pasar malam last week, and here are our thoughts.

The first thing you will notice here is an open area with sheltered seating. Located right outside Hougang MRT Station Exit B, this is a nice little spot for you to enjoy your street food. However, if it is raining heavily (like when we were there), we recommend heading inside the bazaar, where there are also indoor seating areas.

Hougang MRT Trade Fair - Pancake Robot

The main thing we wanted to check out at the Hougang MRT Trade Fair is this innovative Pancake Robot. It is quite simple to use. You just need to place your order through a screen, make payment, and the robot will start making your pancake.

There are only 2 main options here — Classic Pancake (S$3) and Double Egg Pancake (S$4). Once you’ve selected your option, you can also choose free toppings like chilli sauce and green onions. Afterwards, you can watch the robot create your pancake in about 5 minutes

Hougang MRT Trade Fair - Double Egg Pancake

We opted for the Double Egg Pancake and added the Secret Chilli Sauce and green onions as toppings. The pancake was piping hot when it came out of the machine, and we had quite high expectations for its taste. But sadly, it did not really live up to them.

While I would say you can try the Pancake Robot for the affordable and fun experience, don’t expect the pancakes to be anywhere close to the best ones you’ve had. We also felt the chilli sauce overpowered the taste of the pancake, so you might want to avoid that topping.

Hougang MRT Trade Fair - The Spud Guy

One thing I would recommend getting from this pasar malam is a Jacket Spud by The Spud Guy. Starting from S$4, you can customise your Jacket Spud by adding fillings and different toppings. We went for the beef filling, mayonnaise and crispy onion toppings, which brought the price up to S$7. It was my first time trying this potato dish and I really enjoyed the crispy flame-torched top and soft texture within. The price-to-portion ratio could be better, though.

Hougang MRT Trade Fair - Creamy Cheese Dipping Mochi

If you’re looking for something on the sweeter side, consider a Creamy Cheese Dipping Sauce Mochi. These sweet round goodies come in a few flavours like Peanut, Chocolate and Matcha. We went for 10 pieces of Purple Sweet Potato mochi for S$10 and I was pleasantly surprised by how well the mochi went with the cheesy sauce. If you have the budget and the sweet tooth for it, definitely try some.

Hougang MRT Trade Fair - carnival games

The Hougang MRT Trade Fair does not just have food, but also family-friendly activities that kids would love. There are carnival games like Popping Balloons with darts and Ring Tossing, as well as claw machines, inflatable bouncy castles and a mini-driving course.

Hougang MRT Trade Fair - retail

If you’re in the market for some new tableware, clothes or portable speakers, there is also an entire retail section in the bazaar that you can check out. Those of you who have green thumbs will also find plants on sale here. If you’re an Hougang resident and want to visit this nearby pasar malam, you have until 3 Dec to do so!
