The first time I made this recipe, I thought my kids would not be able to eat them because of the ghost pepper. It was going to be mama’s special dish since I love spicy food so much.
Boy was I wrong! My whole family loved it and it very quickly became our fallback dish when we needed a quick appetizer or side dish.
What are Ghost Peppers?
If you’re not familiar with ghost peppers, it is one of the hottest peppers on the Scoville scale (it currently ranks #7 as of 2020).
It is also known as Bhut Jolokia and is cultivated in India. Even though it is not the hottest pepper in the world, it is still very spicy and has been known to bring a grown man to his knees!
This easy spicy chicken wings recipe is made with ghost pepper sauce. I have used Dave’s Ghost Pepper Naga Jolokia Hot Sauce for many years and it’s still my favorite spicy sauce.
The secret is to use a very small quantity; just enough to feel the heat in your food but not enough to burn you. I have accidentally put in a little more than I intended to in the past, and it was way too hot to consume!
The beauty of this ghost pepper wings recipe is that you can easily adjust the level of spiciness while still enjoying the heat!
Ingredients Used
How to Make Ghost Pepper Wings
Ghost pepper wings are very easy to make and do not require any special equipment.
- First, split the chicken wings at the joint, wash, and pat dry. The dryer they are, the crispier they will be. Lightly dust on a little salt on the chicken and rub it in.
- I like to fry my chicken wings, although you can bake them instead. Frying gets in some more healthy fats and makes me feel fuller quicker.
- You can use a deep fryer or a regular pan. If using a regular pan, you’ll have to flip the chicken wings halfway to ensure it is evenly fried.
- Fry the chicken wings until they are cooked through and crispy.
- When the wings are almost ready, start preparing the sauce. In a separate pan, melt the butter on low heat and add the coconut aminos.
- Add in all the spices – ghost pepper, smoked paprika, thyme, salt, black pepper, and lemon pepper and stir.
- Take out the fried chicken wings and place them in a bowl. Pour in the pepper sauce and stir till the spices are well mixed in.
Bake It in The Oven or Air Fryer
You can easily make ghost pepper wings in the oven or air fryer.
Bake the chicken wings for 25 minutes at 375F, flipping halfway. Then increase the temperature to 400F and bake for 5 more minutes till the chicken wings are crispy.
This makes 12 servings and contains 0 net carbs per serving.
What can I eat these with?

Tips and substitutions
- When adding the ghost pepper, pour it very slowly on the measuring spoon or it can quickly spill over and make the hot wings too spicy to consume.
- If you don’t have a ¼ measuring spoon, use 3 – 4 drops.
- This splash guard is a lifesaver if you are using a regular pan. It really prevents splashes and burns.
- You can make ghost pepper wings less spicy by using only ⅛ teaspoon of ghost pepper or drastically increase the spiciness by using ½ teaspoon. But be warned, it is extremely spicy at ½ teaspoon!
