Once you try making applesauce from scratch, you may never want to buy store-bought again!
Living and food blogging in Italy has been exciting and sometimes challenging, especially when I want to share recipes that I grew up with. In other words not Italian. For example, when I wanted to share my Mom’s Shortbread, how many times did I make those before I discovered a high protein flour was needed so they don’t bake flat.

And since I had a few recipes that I wanted to share of my mother’s using applesauce I knew I would never find that in the grocery stores, I decided I would have to make my own. And I did! And after all these years I still can’t find it in the grocery store!
Recipe Ingredients
- 4 medium apples
- water
- lemon juice
- granulated sugar
- cinnamon
How to make Homemade Applesauce
In a medium pot add the chopped peeled apples, water and lemon juice. Cover the pot and cook on low until the apples are soft.

Then add the sugar and cinnamon and mix to combine. Mash the apples with a potato masher or fork and continue to cook until thickened.

Let the applesauce cool. You can either leave the applesauce chunky or puree until smooth.
How to store Homemade Applesauce
Once the applesauce has cooled it should be stored in the refrigerator. It will keep for up to three days. Applesauce can also be frozen, either in an airtight container or freezer safe glass jars. It will keep up to two months in the freezer.

What are the best apples for making Applesauce
The best apples for making applesauce are Cameo, Cortland, Empire, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, Honey Crisp, Jonagold, McIntosh, Pink Lady and Rome Beauty. You could use one type or a combination of two or three might make for a tasty applesauce.
These days I am loving the Cameo apple, it’s has a dense, crisp, and juicy ivory-white flesh with the perfect sweet-tart taste. and best of all it will resist browning well when cut, which makes it one of my favourites for making applesauce.
What is the best way for keeping apples from turning brown?
Nothing worse than brown apples, therefore lemon juice is squeezed over the apples to keep them from turning brown or try a Cameo apple!
Are Apples good for you?
Apples are very good for you. According to Healthline, they contain Vitamin C, Potassium and Vitamin K among others. Eating an apple a day is actually a very good idea, and make sure to leave the skin on, because it contains half of the fiber and many of the polyphenols.
