These are so popular on most Southern menus and perfect with just about any meal of the day.
These fried apples are one of those recipes that can be served for breakfast, dessert, or right alongside a comforting dinner.
They are especially wonderful spooned over pancakes, waffles, biscuits, oatmeal, ice cream, or even a slice of warm pound cake.
I love using a combination of Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Gala apples, depending on how sweet or tart I want the finished dish. Leaving the peel on gives the apples a beautiful color and helps them retain their shape while cooking.
They are simple, old-fashioned, and made with ingredients that turn into something surprisingly delicious.
Tender apple wedges simmer in apple juice with a buttery, perfect bite, then they are coated in a sweet, warmly spiced apple glaze that just shouts the start of Fall weather.

Tips for making the best Country Apples
- Don’t overcook the apples. This is the most important tip. You want them tender enough to cut easily with a fork but firm enough to hold their shape.
- Choose apples that hold up well when cooked. Granny Smith and Honeycrisp are especially good choices because they don’t become mushy as quickly.
- Cut the apples evenly. Similar-sized wedges will cook at the same rate.
- Keep the peel on or remove it. Leaving the peel on gives the finished apples a rustic, old-fashioned appearance.
- If you prefer softer apples, peel them first.
- Stir the glaze constantly. Cornstarch thickens quickly, and stirring prevents lumps or scorching.
- Don’t skip the apple juice. It gives these apples much more flavor than using water.
- Add rum for a richer kick at the end which is totally optional
- Taste before serving. Depending on the apples you use, you may want an additional tablespoon of sugar.
- A sprinkle of toasted pecans on top adds the perfect finishing touch.
- You can also use a combination of apples. Mixing a tart apple with a sweet variety creates a more interesting flavor.
- Store leftover apples in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Questions on Making Country-Style Apples
- Frequently Asked Questions: Can I peel the apples? Absolutely. The peel can be left on for color and texture, but peeled apples work just as well.
- Why did my apples get mushy? They were probably cooked a little too long. Start checking them early and remove them as soon as they are fork-tender.
- Can I use apple cider instead of apple juice? Yes. Apple cider will give the dish an even deeper apple flavor.
- Can I use frozen apples? Fresh apples are best for this recipe because they hold their shape better, but thawed frozen apples can work in a pinch. Handle them gently because they may become softer during cooking.
- Can I make these less sweet? Yes. Start with less sugar, especially if you are using naturally sweet apples such as Gala or Honeycrisp.
