Formula 1 returns to Malaysia as Sepang hosts Bahrain Grand Prix this October

After nearly a decade away from the Formula 1 calendar, Sepang International Circuit is making a surprise return this October by hosting the 2026 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.

Originally scheduled for April, the Bahrain Grand Prix was postponed due to the ongoing conflict in Iran. Bahrain had explored rescheduling the race for 4 October, but the worsening situation made it impossible to hold the event there.

To keep the 2026 Formula 1 calendar on track, Malaysia will step in as the host venue, with the race taking place at Sepang International Circuit from 2 to 4 Oct 2026, between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix. The event is still subject to final approvals, including sign-off from the World Motor Sport Council.

Bahrain will continue funding the race, meaning it will be known as the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, despite being held at Sepang.

The upcoming race also marks Formula 1’s return to Malaysia for the first time since 2017, when Max Verstappen claimed victory at Sepang. 

First introduced to the F1 calendar in 1999, the circuit remains a fan favourite thanks to its challenging layout, unpredictable tropical weather and thrilling races.

Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali said the arrangement reflects the sport’s ability to adapt while preserving a full race calendar, adding that Sepang holds a special place in Formula 1 history. 

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem also welcomed the championship’s return to Malaysia, highlighting the close cooperation between all parties involved throughout the process.

If you’re already planning a trip to Singapore for the Grand Prix, this could be the perfect excuse to extend your motorsport weekend with a stop at Sepang, especially since the two races will take place on back-to-back weekends.
