This is an EXTREMELY simple recipe that delivers a ton of flavour and cooks in less than 10 minutes. It’s the perfect healthy meal for a busy weeknight! It utilizes pre-made tom yum paste as a marinade for salmon, or I’ve also used it with steelhead trout. In the recipe card, I’ll also include how to make tom yum paste from scratch for those who are interested.
Now, you can’t pay me enough to make an actual tom yum soup with premade tom yum paste, but it’s actually a really convenient way to get tom yum flavour on to solid food, such as a piece of protein! You can also apply this technique to chicken, which was the original inspiration I had for this recipe, as I discuss in the video tutorial in the recipe card.
I served this with jasmine rice, but I can see this going well with non-Thai sides such as mashed potato as well. Since it is a dry dish,I recommend serving it with something soupy or saucy. I served it with a pounded cucumber salad which has a lot of dressing and worked out well.

Notes
You can also try DIY-ing your own tom yum paste! I have made tom yum paste before in my Tom Yum Fried Rice, and you can use that recipe but omit the fish sauce and soy sauceto make the paste less runny so it can be applied to the fish without running off. Add salt instead,½ teaspoon to start, and taste and adjust from there.

InstructionsÂ
- Combine the tom yum paste with sugar and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Taste the paste and add more sugar if needed;you can also add Thai chili paste (nam prik pao) to make it sweeter if you have it. If it needs more salt, add salt or fish sauce. Tip:It should taste sweet-salty-sour in roughly equal parts, but feel free to adjust this taste to your liking. This will be the taste of your salmon so it should taste good as is!
¼ cup tom yum paste,1 ½ Tablespoons granulated sugar
- Spread the paste evenly on to the fish, making sure to cover the sides but not the skin. You should use up all of the paste and there should be a good amount of paste on it (see picture above for what it should look like). Marinate for at least 30 minutes, longer if you have time, and up to 8 hours. 20 mins is fine if you're in a rush.If baking, preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
1 lb salmon fillet
-
Cook the fish in an air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for about 6 minutes, or bake in an oven at 375°F (190°C) for 8 -10 minutes. I like salmon that isn't quite fully cooked as it is much more moist, but feel free to cook it to your liking.
Plate and top with chopped green onions and/or cilantro. Serve with rice or your side dish of choice. Enjoy!
