So Good Bakery is a popular Hong Kong bakery with 6 outlets
If you’re a fan of Hong Kong fare, chances are you’ve heard of the So Good brand. With over 10 outlets across Singapore, including several cha chaan teng and a seafood restaurant, the homegrown brand has become a go-to for comforting Hong Kong classics. As someone who could happily survive on bread alone, I was curious to see if the popular So Good Bakery delivers just as well.

Since their i12 Katong outlet is the closest to our office, I jio-ed my colleague for a much-needed tea break to find out if the bakery lives up to its reputation. Read on for our honest review!

Food at So Good Bakery

We started with their best-selling polo buns. The bakery offers these buns in two flavours: the plain HK Crispy Polo Bun ($1.60) and the savoury HK Char Siew Polo Bun ($3). We worked up quite an appetite after traveling there, so we had to order both!
The buns were topped with a thin, sweet, buttery crust that made them a joy to eat. The delicate, crumbly cookie-like texture lent a nice contrast to the fluffy, airy bread within.
That said, we would’ve preferred if the plain version had a thicker layer of that delicious crust, as the bun became a tad bland after a while without a filling. Perhaps it would be better with a slab of butter, though that’s understandably not an option since the bakery only offers takeaway.

On the flip side, the HK Char Siew Polo Bun fared much better. While it came with the same thin crust as the plain version, the generous, sweet-savoury filling ensured each bite was bold, juicy, and flavourful. Still, it would’ve been nice to have more of that delicious crust.
Do note that the char siew here is a tad saltier than what you might find elsewhere. It wasn’t an issue for me, but if you prefer a sweeter profile—like my colleague—this may not be your cup of tea.

As recommended by the staff, we also got their popular HK Cocktail Bun ($2).

A glance at the photo above, and it may seem the bread lacks filling—but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The buttery, sweet-savoury filling was rich and flavourful, zhnged up by a generous portion of coconut shreds that added a fragrant aroma and subtle crunch.
The hollow upper-half also helped the bread retain its shape while keeping a soft, airy, and fluffy texture, even after dabao-ing it back to the office.

Up next was the Lemon Custard Bun ($2.20).

We were impressed by the thick lemon custard core. The custard struck the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. Its silky, creamy texture paired beautifully with the fluffy pastry encasing it.
We also appreciated the scatter of mini dough balls on top, adding a crunchy contrast to the soft bun.

Before leaving, we couldn’t resist getting a couple of their famous HK Puff Egg Tarts ($2.30).

The tarts boasted a delicate, cumbly crust and a jiggly, silky-smooth core. The creamy filling was pleasantly eggy and lightly sweet, complementing the tasty, buttery shell.
It was delicious, but if we had to nitpick, we would’ve liked the crust to be a touch less thick, as it felt a little too dense after a while.
Ambience at So Good Bakery

There are currently six So Good Bakery outlets in Singapore, but for this review, we visited their i12 Katong outlet. While the space is a tad small, there’s still enough room to browse the selection and queue for your bakes. The takeaway bakery sports a clean and simple setup, making it easy to drop by for a quick fix of fresh treats.
So Good Bakery’s i12 Katong outlet is located on the first floor of the mall, a quick five-minute walk from Marine Parade MRT Station.
So Good Bakery – Eatbook review
There are hundreds of bakeries scattered around Singapore, and So Good Bakery does a commendable job of competing in the crowded market. While not everything was perfect, the affordable prices and accessible locations make it a spot we wouldn’t mind revisiting the next time we’re craving a quick and satisfying snack.
