When I was younger, chicken rice would be my go-to meal. However, as I grow up and my taste buds start to evolve, I soon realise that there is far more to the world than chicken rice, a better version even, in duck rice.
There are two main types of duck rice in Singapore – the Hokkien type, which is generously drizzled in sauce and occasionally cooked with yam rice, and the Teochew type, which dons a simpler appearance with its light gravy and classic plain white rice. The duck meat can be roasted or prepared the Teochew way, wherein the braised duck meat is served deboned and thinly sliced.
I enjoy my duck rice lathered in gravy, with the duck meat being soft and chewy. The rice should be doused in equally as much gravy, and having a side of roasted peanuts definitely is a plus in my book.
Considering that there are numerous stalls out there that definitely shine, I have compiled a list of the 12 best duck rice stalls worth checking out.
Now, don’t duck from this article and let’s take a quack look at the top 12 duck rice stalls in Singapore.

Top 12 Duck Rice Stalls
1. Rui Heng Braised Duck
Rui Heng Braised Duck is located right outside my junior college, and when my canteen was way too packed (as it often is), my friends and I would find ourselves queuing up to buy their duck rice.
Touted as being one of the highest rated duck rice stalls, Rui Heng Braised Duck often has incredibly long queues during lunch hour.
The Duck Rice here costs S$5.50, and while we always order it to go, its presentation when we choose to have it in the coffeeshop is striking. The rice is generously drizzled with their sauce, being topped by their succulent duck meat. Tau Kwa slices, roasted peanuts and half a boiled egg surround it, making this dish feel more complete.
What I enjoyed most was that their duck is extremely moist on the inside and firm on the outside. It retains the gravy flavouring well, having that soy-sauce, savoury flavour, while also tasting incredibly juicy. The rice may have a slight resemblance to Hainanese chicken rice, being aromatic. The sides of tau kwa and the egg are soft and are better enjoyed with chilli on the side or the gravy.

2. Hup Seng Duck Rice

Kola Food Centre is known for 1 thing — that being their duck rice. Hup Seng Duck Rice is well known among locals, who will deliberately take time driving down for a taste of their duck rice. It took a while to get here, considering that it’s located in an industrial park.
When we arrived at midday, we were fortunate enough to be near the front of the line. From the moment we got our food to the moment we finished it, the line appeared to have not shortened at all.

We ordered the Regular Duck Rice (S$5.50). The lady taking our order immediately grabbed her ladle, dousing our bowl of rice in gravy, while placing a plate of duck and a separate bowl of soup on our tray. Overall, the service was incredibly fast.
Onto the duck itself, it was delightfully tender! It was soaked long enough in the gravy to the point where I could taste a slight herbal taste, which was rather savoury. I enjoyed that this duck was plump and savoury. The rice could have done with another scoop of gravy, for I prefer my rice to be totally drenched in it, and I found that the soup had a light herbal taste that was not too overpowering.

3. Heng Gi Goose and Duck Rice

I’m not too familiar with Senja, but I am familiar with Heng Gi Goose and Duck Rice. Located in Senja Hawker Centre, Heng Gi Goose and Duck Rice is definitely popular amongst residents here, judging by the long queue I found myself in at 1pm.

We ordered the Braised Duck Pumpkin Yam Rice (S$4.50) and the fatty layers on the duck meat made us waste no time digging in. The rice grains, though slightly sticky, exude a rich umami flavour that we enjoyed.

Another dish also worth trying is the Braised Duck White Rice (S$4). The thick gravy is concealed under the duck meat, which adds a more concentrated savoury taste to the white rice.
The serving of meat was generous, with the outside having a nice layer of moisture that we enjoyed, making it succulent. With its affordable prices and convenient location, it’s no wonder that Heng Gi Goose and Duck Rice have amassed such a large following.

4. Ming Fa Duck Rice

Open for only 6 hours a day, you have to be quick if you want to get a bite from Ming Fa Duck Rice.
With a 4.5-star rating on Google, Ming Fa Duck Rice is the place to be for quality duck rice, often selling out by 12pm. That’s before I even get up!

For S$5, the spread is humongous. It may even be big enough to be served amongst 2 people. Their yam rice is known to be fragrant, with a slight bit of sweetness kicking in at the end. Their duck is also known to be huge, being served on a separate platter.
Ming Fa’s gravy is also a few shades darker compared to other duck rice stalls around. This produces a thicker and richer flavour, having a velvety texture and is suitable for those who enjoy bolder flavours.

5. Ah Xiao Teochew Braised Duck

When diners are raving about both the duck rice and the kway chap, you know that this stall is the real deal. Ah Xiao Teochew Braised Duck’s Duck Kway Set (S$5.50) is equally as popular as its Duck Set (S$6) and Braised Duck Rice (S$4).
With 2 outlets — 1 located at Bendemeer and another at Golden Mile Food Centre, both have an impressive track record, having 4.6 stars on Google. It seems to be that the quality remains top-notch, no matter which outlet you frequent.

The duck is neatly plated on top of a whole serving of rice. A recommendation would be to add an additional Braised Egg (S$0.70) to pair with the braised duck rice.
The gravy has a slight herbal taste, but not one that is overwhelming. The duck meat is bite-sized and extremely succulent.
While you can opt for Yam Rice (S$0.70) over at the Bendemeer outlet, the white rice at the Golden Mile outlet does a good job at soaking up the luscious gravy. When pairing the braised egg with the herbal gravy, it adds that additional depth that’s needed in a good plate of duck rice.

6. Chuan Kee Boneless Braised Duck

Located in the famous Ghim Moh Road Market & Food Centre, Chuan Kee Boneless Braised Duck has been around for over 15 years. If that doesn’t entice you enough, they have also been awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand for 4 years — in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022.
You’ll know when you’ve reached Chuan Kee Boneless Braised Duck by its snaking lines and vibrant storefront. Despite the recent price hikes, Chuan Kee still remains affordable, only having risen by a dollar, serving up duck rice at 3 price points — S$4, S$5 and S$6. The higher the price, the more duck meat you get, and trust me — it’s a lot.

The duck meat is doused in a soy-herbal sauce that tastes light on your taste buds. Chuan Kee Braised Duck Rice does not skimp on its gravy, for with every dish, not only is the duck meat lathered in gravy, but so is each morsel of rice.
The soup they serve up is piping hot, complementing the duck rice with its heavier herbal taste. It’s no wonder that Chuan Kee Braised Duck Rice has a loyal following, as they seem to execute each component beautifully.

7. Run Ji Cooked Food

Run Ji Duck Rice is conveniently located right when you step into Chinatown Complex. With a straightforward menu of either selling duck rice, duck porridge, or simply the duck meat itself, Run Ji does not overcomplicate things.

As shown on their display, their Regular Duck Rice (S$4.50) comes with a large portion of white rice and an even larger serving of duck meat. You may be wondering why Run Ji Cooked Food is even on the list, considering that I stated before that I prefer my duck rice lathered in gravy. When I lifted up all the duck meat, that was where the true treasure was — in the gravy.
The duck meat was more on the tough side, but felt easy to chew still, and did not taste as herbal-y as others. I prefer having a ratio of more duck than rice, and was extremely happy to note that by the time I was finished with my rice, I still had a hearty chunk of duck left.

8. Jin Ji Teochew Braised Duck & Kway Chap

Jin Ji Teochew Braised Duck & Kway Chap is well known for its rice, with each grain being nicely coated with an unmistakable intensity of soy sauce.
At just S$4, the pieces of duck meat were rather large for the price. There is an option to get the S$5 version, which I assumed meant more duck. The duck meat here is not boneless, which may turn off a few die-hard boneless duck meat fans, but the meat itself is undeniably tender and soft. I enjoyed that, apart from the bones, I did not have to do much chewing. Each mouthful had that satisfactory, juicy bite which I thoroughly enjoyed.
The meal came with a portion of soup, which looked clear at first, but had a strong, distinct herbal taste when I tried it.
They also sell other options, such as the Bento Combo Jumbo Set (S$10). This comes with kway chap ingredients like taupok, beancurd, pickled vegetables, an egg, pork belly and cucumber slices.

9. Happy Duck

Located in Bukit Merah View Market & Hawker Centre, Happy Duck is a stall known for their well-marinated and smooth duck meat. Pricing their dishes within S$4 and S$4.50, they sell affordable yet tasty duck rice and kway chap.

While their Regular Duck Rice is priced at S$4, for a top-up of S$0.50 for their Signature Duck Rice, diners can enjoy an added braised egg and a few pieces of tau kwa. The brown grains are nicely soaked in the thick, dark gravy, giving it that darkened look. The gravy is denser than most stalls, suitable for those who enjoy lots of gravy in their duck rice.
The duck meat has a good ratio of skin to meat, with the underside of the meat being juicy and sweet. A must-try if you’re in the area, or planning to visit!

10. Hua Fong Kee Roasted Duck

If you ever visit Block 128 Toa Payoh Lorong 1, you may spot Hua Fong Kee Roasted Duck for its snaking queues during lunchtime. However, if you’re patient and persistent, you’ll eventually be rewarded with a large plate of delectable duck rice.
This Cantonese roast meat stall has been operating since 1988, where a plate of Roasted Duck Rice is affordably priced at S$4.50.
The duck meat is tender and juicy, well complemented by the generous additions of sweet and savoury dark braised sauce. It’s fatty and thick enough to fill you up quickly; you might not even make it to the rice itself! The gravy might be the best component for Hua Fong Kee, given its rich, thick gravy that coats all the ingredients on the plate, elevating the flavour significantly.
If you live in Toa Payoh, count yourself lucky for having convenient access to this stall.

11. The Houson Duck 和兴卤味

All the way on the other end of Singapore, Jurong Gateway also serves up savoury duck rice. At the Houson Duck, diners have the option of choosing between the regular Duck Rice (S$4.50) or the Duck Rice Set (S$5.50), which has the addition of a braised egg, tau kwa, and braised peanuts.
If you live far from Jurong, I suggest you go all in and try their duck rice set to get the full authentic experience.

If you’re in love with fatty and chewy duck meat, this stall has it all. At first glance, the duck presents itself as having a firm and tough exterior. Sink your teeth into it, though, and you’ll be proven wrong — it has a wonderful gummier and softer texture.
Each grain of rice is nicely coated in the gravy, giving it a darkened look, something we’re all familiar with at this point. While the gravy is substantial, the cook on the duck really makes up for it.

12. Heng Heng Boneless Duck Rice

Heng Heng Boneless Duck Rice is a hidden gem, located all the way in Tuas. If you are deterred because of the location, did you know that this stall has 4.9 stars on Google? Westies are about to have a field day with this entry.

Heng Heng Boneless Duck Rice sells their Regular Duck Rice at S$4, with the duck meat coming in smaller, bite-sized portions. The duck meat is well-marinated and moist on the inside. A thick layer of gravy coats the duck, having a creamy-like texture, which is savoury and complements the duck meat well.
The regular duck rice is not the only popular dish here, as their Kway Chap (S$5.50) is equally beloved, with diners complimenting the silkiness of the kway chap and the savouriness of the broth. When you make the trip all the way here, it would be best to try both!
