Beo Crescent Curry Rice kicked out by controversial new coffeeshop owners

Must Try

What on earth is happening to our cultural icons and local darlings? In what comes as the twisting of a knife in an already terrible year, the iconic Beo Crescent Curry Rice, located in Roxy Square Kopitiam, will have its last day of operations on 30 Sep 2025.

According to a Facebook post, the unnamed stall is one of several being evicted from the coffee shop after the premises were purchased by the new owners from China for an exorbitant sum of S$4 million.

Opened in 1988, the stall is considered by many to be one of the best Hainanese Curry Rice stalls in Singapore.

It isn’t the first time Beo Crescent Curry Rice has hit the news for a potential closure. Similar rumours spread in 2022, only for them to be dispelled by the stall owners as the coffee shop was merely undergoing renovation.

The news spread like wildfire across social media, with the typical accusations against the government of not protecting local businesses.

One amusing comment claimed that Members of Parliament (MPs) only visit hawker centres during election campaigns. Ironically, I found an awfully timed post by politician Josephine Teo visiting the stall a few days ago.

And as much as I hate agreeing with pessimistic takes like these, it’s tough to deny the reality of the situation. So many of our beloved hawkers have left us, whether it be because of old age, rising rent, or being left behind by the unstoppable march of progress.

The owners of Beo Crescent Curry Rice are currently in talks with the new coffee shop operators, in the hopes of remaining open. If not, they wish to find another location nearby. We can only pray for the best for this legendary stall and the aunties behind it.
