In Singapore, few neighbourhoods carry a reputation quite like Yishun’s. Mention the name and it almost inevitably conjures headlines — strange incidents, viral stories, and a steady stream of news that has turned it into a national meme. But beyond the chatter and notoriety lies something far more grounded: a deeply rooted food culture waiting to be explored.
At the heart of it is Yishun 925 Hainanese Chicken Rice, located a stone’s throw away from the bustling Northpoint City (which people remark is itself designed like a maze). Serving plates since 1990, the long-standing favourite draws its own kind of attention – snaking queues, loyal regulars, and a reputation for tender chicken and fragrant rice.
Some reviews mention unreasonably small portions of chicken, with some users lamenting that their “half-chicken” seems more like a quarter of the chicken. Some mention excellent gizzards and chicken feet while others say that you should go for just the chicken rice instead — surely the stall must receive a lot of attention for it to garner this many mixed reviews.
Having seen all the mixed reviews online, I had to make my way down to try it for myself.
What to order at 925 Yishun Hainanese Chicken Rice
The moment we stepped out of the car, the smell of chicken rice wafted out from the coffeeshop downstairs, and that’s how we knew we were at the correct location.
925 Yishun Hainanese Chicken Rice is located at the right corner of a small coffeeshop, and it should not be hard to spot them by the bright orange shirts and distinct signboard above them.

The lady at the counter recommended the Signature Small Portion Chicken (S$20) for 3 pax, as she mentioned that the amount of chicken was more than what the Chicken Rice for Three Set (S$15) would’ve offered. And so, that’s what we got!
Previously, the store used to sell chicken in half or whole chicken portions, but has since amended the menu to be ‘small’ or ‘big’ portions instead. We reckon this change is to ensure similar portions of chicken for each order, regardless of the size of one whole chicken.

We first tried the chicken, which was more than enough for the 3 of us. The chicken skin was smooth and jellylike on top of the tender meat.

The chicken breast was well done and moist, and had a firm texture. The sauce that came with the chicken was not too salty, making it good to pair with rice.

Next to the chicken, the achar on the plate was tasty — not too sour, with the cucumber retaining its crunch and providing a refreshing palate cleanser.
On the side, you can see the chilli and dark soy sauce that came with the chicken rice. The chilli brings a kick (careful if you can’t handle your spice!), and a good texture that wasn’t too watery.

We also tried their Chicken Organ (S$3), which I was hesitant to try as someone who does not take well to gizzards. Upon some persuasion, I took a bite of it, and found it was not too bad! I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of fishiness or metallic tang, and it had a good chew to it.

However, I could not say the same when I tried the liver. It was powdery and not to my liking, though I reckon those who enjoy gizzards may take to it better.

Their rice was fragrant and well-cooked, and I could taste each grain of rice. My favourite way to enjoy the rice was to pair each scoop with a small piece of chicken, dark soy sauce, and chilli.
Who is 925 Yishun Hainanese Chicken Rice best for
Chicken feet fans would be disappointed to find out that they are no longer selling chicken feet. Yup, me too. However, 925 Yishun Hainanese Chicken Rice still serves consistent, comforting chicken rice, best for those looking for a no-frills, classic plate of chicken rice done the traditional way.
How to get there?
925 Yishun Hainanese Chicken Rice is located at Yishun Central, just a 6-minute walk from Yishun MRT via Exit E.
Do we recommend 925 Yishun Hainanese Chicken Rice?

For north-siders, 925 Yishun Hainanese Chicken Rice is a neighbourhood staple worth trying, especially if you love fragrant rice and punchy chilli.
For those who stay a distance away, my dining companions and I remarked that while this chicken rice was good, alternatives offering the same quality could easily be found elsewhere, so it might not be worth a trip across Singapore.
